Rugs are versatile in their utility and there are a number of suggested design guidelines that can help you select the right rug for your room. Rugs can be used strictly as a decorating tool to visually invite one's attention to a particular area, or to protect the primary flooring in a highly trafficked region, or to provide a warm or slip-resistant area for your feet on an otherwise cold or slippery floor.
A rug's durability and maintenance burden is influenced by its construction and fiber qualities. The more durable rugs are generally made of tightly twisted individual yarns that are densely woven together. The choice of fibers affects the rug's "feel" as well as its durability.
The visual features of a rug can be produced by weaving yarns of different colors or by a printing process. A rug's colors and patterns can visually complement the décor associated with upholstery fabrics and even paintings (e.g., The Mohawk Select line of Thomas Kinkade rugs).
